What is young adult coaching?

Coaching for the gap between knowing what to do and doing it

Young adult life coaching is one-on-one support for people in their late teens, 20s and early 30s who are stuck on direction, motivation or follow-through. A coach helps you get clear on what you want, build a plan and a weekly structure you can actually run, and stay accountable while you put it into action. It's practical and forward-looking. It isn't therapy, and you don't need a diagnosis.

Most young adults we work with aren't lazy, and they aren't broken. They've been told to figure it out on their own: take a test, polish a resume, pick a major, just do it. What's usually missing is a process for deciding what's next, and the structure to follow through once you know.

The goal: momentum you can keep up on your own.
Sound familiar?

Where young adults usually are when they reach out

  • I graduated, and now I'm back home with no plan.Applications go nowhere, or never get sent.
  • I started college, and it stalled.Missed classes, a semester off, not sure it's the right path.
  • I have a job, but it's going nowhere.Underemployed, bored, and not sure what else you'd even do.
  • I know what to do. I just can't make myself start.Procrastination, avoidance, then guilt.
  • Everyone else seems to have it figured out.Confidence is low, and comparison makes it worse.
  • My parents are worried, and so am I.The tension at home is real. (Parents: start here.)
What's going on underneath

Seven things that keep young adults stuck

These overlap. Most people we meet have three or four at once, which is why advice aimed at only one of them rarely sticks.

  • 1

    No clear direction

Not sure what career fits, underemployed or between things, and the pressure to choose makes it harder.

  • 2

    Trouble getting started (executive function)

Planning, starting, managing time and following through. Common with ADHD, and common without it.

  • 3

    Motivation that comes and goes

Avoidance, procrastination, and waiting to feel ready before doing anything.

  • 4

    Low confidence and self-sabotage

Not applying, quitting early, or talking yourself out of things before you try.

  • 5

    Independence and "adulting"

Budgeting, routines, living at home longer than planned, sometimes called failure to launch.

  • 6

    Screens crowding out progress

Gaming and scrolling that fill the hours the plan was supposed to use.

  • 7

    Feeling isolated

Fewer friends nearby, social anxiety, and not much support for what's next.

How coaching works at LifeSketch

A clear process, a structure you can run, and a coach in your corner

A small group planning at a whiteboard covered in sticky notes
  1. Get clear

Where you are, where you want to be, and what's in the way. If you don't know what you want yet, that's where we start.

  2. Build the structure

A plan, a weekly rhythm and simple systems for starting and following through. We call it your Self-Operating System.

  3. Run it, with support

Regular 1:1 sessions for accountability and problem-solving, so a bad week doesn't turn into a lost month.

Structure without support falls apart, and support without structure drifts. Coaching gives you both.

What a young adult coaching program looks like

90 days, one season at a time

Private, one-on-one coaching in 90-day seasons, so no one commits to a year on hope. Here's how a season usually runs.

Nine 1:1 sessions with Scott or Emily, about three a month. $3,500, or three monthly payments of $1,200. See launch coaching →

  1. Sessions 1–3

    Get clear

Where you are, what you want, what's in the way, and one small step you'll actually take this week.

  2. Sessions 4–7

    Build and run it

A weekly plan and review, simple systems for starting, and real steps toward work, school or independence.

  3. Sessions 8–9

    Make it yours

Keep what's working, fix what isn't, and practice running your week without leaning on your coach.

  4. Day 90

Executive function coaching for young adults

The skills school never taught directly

Executive function is the set of skills that turns intentions into action: planning, starting, managing time, staying focused and following through. School supplies a lot of that structure from the outside. After school, most young adults have to build it themselves, and that's where many get stuck, with or without ADHD.

Executive function coaching builds that structure on purpose, around how your brain actually works. More on executive function coaching →

  • 1

    Planning a week

A plan that fits your real week, not an ideal one.

  • 2

    Starting

The very next smallest step, so starting stops feeling like a wall.

  • 3

    Time

Seeing time, estimating it and padding it. More on time blindness.

  • 4

    Focus

Setting up the conditions to stay on one thing.

  • 5

    Follow-through

Weekly check-ins that catch a slip before it becomes a lost month.

  • 6

    Getting back on track

A way to restart after a bad day without starting over.

Questions

Young adult coaching FAQ

What does a life coach for young adults actually do?

A coach helps you get clear on what you want, turn it into a plan, and build a weekly structure for following through. Sessions are practical: what happened this week, what got in the way, and what you'll do next. The goal is momentum you can keep up on your own.

How is coaching different from therapy?

Therapy focuses on emotional health and often on understanding the past. Coaching focuses on what's next and how to get there. If anxiety or depression is the main issue, counseling is usually the better first step, and Colorado residents can see our associate clinicians.

Do I need an ADHD diagnosis?

No. Our coaching is ADHD-friendly, so it works well if you have ADHD or suspect you might. Many clients have no diagnosis at all. What matters is the trouble with starting, planning and following through, whatever the cause.

What ages do you work with?

Mostly young adults from about 18 into their early 30s, including college students, recent grads and people a few years into work. For teens, see our teens page.

How much does young adult coaching cost?

A 90-day coaching season is $3,500, or three monthly payments of $1,200. The Job Search Accelerator is $4,500 for about six months of coaching. The self-paced ADHD Career Change course is $197. Counseling in Colorado is $160 per session. The first call is free.

Can my parents pay or be involved?

Yes, many parents pay. It's still your coaching. We agree up front on what gets shared, and parents join the kickoff or the checkpoint only if you want them there. Parents can learn more on our page for parents.

Is coaching online? Do you work outside Colorado?

Coaching is online from anywhere, or in person at our office in Littleton, Colorado. Counseling is for Colorado residents only.

What if I'm not motivated to start?

That's common, and it's part of what we work on. You don't have to feel ready. The first sessions focus on small, doable steps and a structure that doesn't depend on motivation.

Is there a life coach for young adults near me?

Our office is in downtown Littleton, Colorado, a short drive from Denver. We coach in person there, or online from anywhere. More on life coaching in Denver & Littleton.

Is this a failure to launch program?

In the practical sense, yes. Launch coaching is a 90-day coaching season for young adults who are stuck after school or living at home without a plan. It focuses on direction, a weekly structure and real next steps. Parents can learn more on our page for parents.

Do you offer mental health coaching for young adults?

Our coaching supports the practical side of wellbeing: routines, motivation, confidence and next steps. It isn't mental health treatment. If anxiety or depression is the main issue, counseling is usually the better first step, and Colorado residents can see our associate clinicians.

Is young adult coaching private?

Yes. Coaching is one-on-one. If parents are paying, we agree up front on what gets shared, and parents join only if you want them there.

What happens on the free call?

It's a 15-minute phone call about where you're stuck and what you want. We'll tell you honestly which option fits, or whether something else would serve you better. No pressure.

Stuck isn't a character flaw. It's where we start.

Tell us where you are. In 15 minutes we'll help you see what would actually help, even if it isn't us.

7 Key Issues for Young Adults:

Young adults (Millenials and Zoomers) are experiencing unprecedented rates of relationship struggles, mental health concerns and challenges around personal/professional development. Below is a summary of challenges and issues that life and career coaching can help young adults address:

  • Academic or Professional Issues: Limited career direction, underemployed/unemployed; difficulty maintaining work load; poor attendance.

  • Independence Issues: Resisting responsibility and ‘adulting’; failure to launch; poor life-skills (e.g. budgeting, organization, etc.).

  • Confidence Issues: Self-sabotage; poor self-esteem and low self worth.

  • Motivation Issues: Constant avoidance and procrastination along with trouble starting and finishing tasks; difficulty with focus and concentration.

  • Relationship Issues: Socially anxious and isolated, difficulty keeping and maintaining friendships, challenges with communication and social skills.

  • Screen-Time Habits: Gaming, scrolling, and other habits that crowd out progress.

  • ADHD & Executive Function: Planning, focus, time management, and follow-through. (For depression or anxiety, Colorado residents can work with our associate clinicians.)

But It Doesn’t Have to Be That Way.
