The T.R.A.P. Map — Understanding Why You're Stuck & How to Get Moving
Most people assume they're stuck because of laziness, lack of motivation, or poor time management. This tool is built on a different premise: avoidance is a strategy, not a character flaw. The T.R.A.P. Map helps you understand the cycle that's keeping you stuck — and gives you a way out.
Start Here Set Your Intention — What do you want to be doing?

Name the task, goal, or responsibility you keep avoiding. Be specific. This is your anchor for everything that follows.

Name the action, not the feeling. "Stop procrastinating" is not a target. "Submit three job applications this week" is.
T Trigger — What sets it off? T

Every avoidance pattern has a starting point — a situation, thought, or feeling that activates it. Identify yours.

T
TRIGGER — The Antecedent
What situation, moment, or feeling starts the cycle?
External Triggers — What's happening around you?
Internal Triggers — What's happening inside you?
Describe your specific trigger situation in your own words:
R Reaction — What happens inside? R

The moment the trigger hits, your body and mind respond automatically. This is the emotional and physical experience of resistance — before you've done anything yet.

R
REACTION — The Internal Response
What happens in your body and mind the moment the trigger hits?
Physical / Body Sensations
Thoughts / Cognitive Response
The belief underneath the reaction — what is resistance telling you?
A Action — What do you do instead? A

This is the avoidance behavior — the routine that interrupts the discomfort. It feels like relief in the moment. It's not laziness. It's a learned strategy.

A
ACTION — The Avoidance Routine
What do you actually do when resistance shows up?
Describe what your avoidance actually looks like on a typical day:
P Payoff — What does avoidance give you? P

This is the most important step. Avoidance works — that's why it persists. Understanding the payoff is how you stop judging yourself and start changing the pattern.

P
PAYOFF — The Reinforcement
The relief feels good. That's the problem — and the key.
Weigh both sides — what does avoidance give you, and what does it cost you?
Payoff — What avoiding GIVES me (short-term relief, protection, comfort) Cost — What avoiding TAKES from me (long-term consequences)
The honest question — is the short-term payoff worth the long-term cost?
The Exit — Choose Your Map-Breaker

Now that you can see the T.R.A.P., you can interrupt it. You don't have to break the whole cycle at once — you just need to change one thing. Choose the Map-Breaker that fits your situation.

Reframe the Belief
Name the action, not the intention. One specific physical step. The smaller and more concrete, the better.
