Failure to Launch Syndrome

Failure to Launch Goes By Many Names

  • Peter Pan Syndrome: People Who Never Want To Grow Up

  • Adult Child Syndrome: People Who Have Trouble Growing Up (In Relation to Addiction)

  • Quarter Life Crisis: Extreme Anxiety Regarding One’s Existence, Purpose And Future.

  • Self Sabotage: Intentionally Or Unintentionally Hindering Our Own Success

  • Arrested Development: Stuck In A Phase of Development

So, What is Failure to Launch?

Failure to Launch Syndrome, often called Peter Pan Syndrome, is defined as the phenomenon of young people (teens and 20-somethings) stuck or slowed in the transition into becoming independent adults. This transition from childhood to adulthood (aka, adolescence) is becoming more volatile, confusing and elongated than in recent history. Young adults and their parents stay entwined much longer than previous generations. One study shows that 25 - 29-year-olds living at home has increased by 300% since the 1970s.

“Failure to Launch is when Emerging Adults are stuck/slowed in the transition of becoming independent… happy, healthy and successful.” - Scott Treas, LPC

And it’s not just about living at home (there are many families and cultures where it’s perfectly acceptable and appropriate to live with family), young people’s handle on mental health, relationships, and physical well-being is rapidly deteriorating too. For example, Generation-Z (Gen Z or Zoomers born between 1995-2008) are experiencing unprecedented rates of anxiety and depression; many are recognizing a growing mental health crisis among America’s youth and the global western world.

A Growing Mental Health Crisis for Young Adults

DATA: Below are some quick stats to see the breadth of the Mental Health Problem and related adulting or young adult issues such as Peter Pan Syndrome:

  • According to the CDC, 20% (15 million) of American teens and adults up to 25 are struggling with mental illness or learning disorders.

    • And that’s just the recognized problem, the CDC also reported that 2/3 (10 million) are undiagnosed or untreated.

  • The American Psychological Association’s 2021 survey has found that 46% of Gen Z adults say that their mental health has worsened.

    • Decisions: Stress has resulted in a severe decline in the ability to make basic decisions (37%-48%) and major life decisions (35%).

  • Suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people aged 10 to 24.

6 Early Warning Signs of Failure to Launch

  1. HIGHLY DEPENDENT: When a young adult is unable to sustain financial, life skills, and/or emotional independence.

    • Financially Dependent: Parents are paying some or all of their adult child’s food, rent, or living expenses.

    • Entitled at Home: While living at home a young adult may feel entitled to resources such as laundry or meals and not contributing (e.g., is messy and rarely clean up after themselves).

    • Emotionally Immature: Reliant solely on family/parents for emotional support, seemingly psychologically immature with difficulty managing emotions (e.g., frequent anxiety attacks) and mood swings.

  2. AVOIDANT BEHAVIOR: When an emerging adult averts responsibility and is unwilling to face distressing interactions.

    • Procrastinating: Constantly delaying getting started or putting things off to the last minute and lacking follow through.

    • Escaping: Through overuse of technology (i.e. video games) or substance use (i.e. vaping, marijuana, or alcohol abuse).

    • Lying: Evading tough situations or repercussions by lies of omission (not voluntarily telling the truth or the whole truth) or lies of commission (flat-out falsehoods).

  3. SELF-SABOTAGE: When a 20-something is continually unsuccessful and frequently rejected at school, work, or in relationships.

    • Quitting: Withdrawing multiple semesters of college or repeatedly quitting or getting fired from jobs.

    • Minimum Effort: Doing the bare minimum amount of work to get by.

    • Burning Bridges: Destroying relationships and opportunities.

  4. NO MOTIVATION: When a young adult feels hopeless and seems to lack ambition and excitement for life.

    • Low Energy: Always tired and having trouble getting out of bed.

    • Lacking Drive and Discipline: Appearing lazing and having little to no work ethic.

    • Dispassionate: Easily bored, apathetic, uninterested and seemingly indifferent.

  5. LACKING DIRECTION: When an emerging adult feels lost, has no vision for their life or career and has no plan for moving forward.

    • Lacking Goals: Not having stated goals or having unrealistic goals and expectations.

    • Indecisive Feeling ambivalent and unwilling to commit to bigger future decisions such as college major and career paths or smaller decisions such as what job to apply to or where to live

    • Lost: Feeling uncertain about the future and living without a plan for what’s next.

  6. LOW CONFIDENCE: Feeling uncertain and anxious about the future, suffering from crippling self-doubt and low self-esteem.

    • Anxious: When a young person is uncertain of what to do, what to expect or of their abilities, they experience crushing apprehension and dread (e.g, ruminating and overthinking).

    • Easily Overwhelmed: Frequently flooded with intense stress and overcome with fear rendering young adults powerless and immobile.

    • Inadequacy: Lacking self-esteem (not feeling good enough) or low self-worth (not seeing intrinsic value e.g., “I don’t deserve to be happy because I’m lazy and a loser.”).
