Who you're reaching

The Informational Interview

You're asking for information and perspective — never a job. Small ask, easy yes.

Play 2 · Cold · Bonus move

The Position Proposal

Don't wait for an ad. Lead with a specific idea for their team — even if no role is posted.

In the meeting

Question Bank

Pick five or six. Lead with genuine curiosity about them; save the door-openers for the end.

Their path

  • How did you get into this work?
  • What surprised you most when you started?
  • If you were starting over today, what would you do differently?

Insight

  • What skills actually matter most here — versus what people assume?
  • What's changing in this field that more people should be watching?
  • What separates the people who thrive from the ones who struggle?

Their company & team

  • What's it actually like to work there?
  • What kind of person does well on a team like yours?
  • What problems is your team most focused on right now?

Door-openers (ask near the end)

  • If someone wanted to be genuinely useful to a team like yours, where's the biggest need?
  • Knowing a bit about my background, where do you see someone like me fitting in this space?
  • Who else would you suggest I learn from?
The one rule: don't ask for a job. The door-opener questions do that work softly — and always close with "Who else should I talk to?" so every conversation hands you the next one.
After you send

The Follow-Up Cadence

Log every send in your Master Tracker (Channel = Hunting) with a Next Action Date. The tracker does the remembering.

Warm · Info-interview

1Send the ask.
2No reply in 5–7 days? One gentle nudge.
3Meet — keep it to 15 minutes.
4Thank within 24 hours.
5Nurture every 4–6 weeks.

Cold · Position proposal

1Touch 1 — the pitch (day 0).
2Touch 2 — nudge (day 3–4).
3Touch 3 — graceful exit (day 8–10).
4Still silent? Move them to Nurture. Not "rejected" — just not now.
When the resistance hits

Objection Reframes

Read this before you hit send.

"I don't have a network."
You know more people than you think. Start with your Network tab — this process builds the rest.
"I'm asking for favors."
You're asking for information, not a job. A small, specific ask is easy to say yes to.
"No one's responding."
You only need one or two yeses to get moving. Run the cadence, then move on without taking it personally.
"I hate networking / I get anxious."
This is structured, not ambiguous. You know exactly what to say — it's on this page — and what the meeting is for. That structure is what makes it doable.
"I can't find the decision-maker."
Start with warm leads. Every conversation points you to the next person. Follow the rabbit.
